WAiNODE™ - Hard Carbon
At WAI Environmental Solutions AS, we create sustainable high-performance carbon products from renewable, bio-based materials. Our newest product, WAiNODE™, is engineered for next-generation sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) – a cleaner, more affordable alternative to lithium-ion batteries.

WAI is scaling up high performance biocarbon products for fossil carbon replacement in steel and ferroalloy industries. Three years ago, with support from the Research Council of Norway (Norges Forskningsråd) and partners SINTEF and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), we started developing a hard carbon material by upgrading our biocarbon in the BIOANODE project. Today, that journey reaches a milestone: our first-generation hard carbon product from spruce sawdust – WAiNODE™.
WAiNODE™ stands out from other carbon-based anode materials with its wider interlayer spacing (d002 ~0.387 nm) and low specific surface area (<4.5 m²/g). This design enables fast charge/discharge rates, reduces expansion during ion insertion, and minimizes irreversible losses – delivering longer cycle life. The wider spacing also makes WAiNODE™ ideal for storing larger ions such as sodium and potassium, in addition to lithium.
WAiNODE™ is an ideal anode material for sodium-ion batteries, offering high specific capacity, high initial coulombic efficiency and long cycle life.
