The SynoProtein Project was officially launched in September 2023. SynoProtein Project is a collaborative project of 11 partners with WAI as Project Coordinator, supported by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) and its members under Grant Agreement No. 101112345.
We kicked off SynoProtein Project at DTU Technical University of Denmark in Copenhagen on September 26, 2023.
11 partners from 4 European countries gathered together and discussed how to produce carbon negative alternative proteins from forest residues to fill the huge protein gap faced by the aquafeed industry. Experts from different fields, namely forestry, pyrolysis, gas fermentation, single cell protein production, syngas reforming, catalytic material, process simulation, feed ingredient agglomeration, aquafeed production, fish nutrients, process up-scaling, life cycle analysis, business planning, communication/dissemination, and project management, were sitting in the same room to share knowledge and exchange information.

SynoProtein project aims to develop, mature, and demonstrate a novel carbon-negative process that converts forest residues into Single-Cell Proteins (SCP) for fish feed, along with the production of biochar for animal feed. By transforming low-value by-products into high-value bio-products, SynoProtein will provide a sustainable protein alternative to soybean and wild fish protein, to meet future demands.
